We are plunged into another simulation, warships on a blue sea under a yellow sun. Lush green forest in the distance, billowing clouds. Another ship pulls up alongside us and opens fire. Toola spent some time sealing off the bottom floor so nobody can accidentally wander in there and start the cataclysm. And then we prepared to head to the big city for some resources and backup.

The gang makes it to the big city. We stash the stolen vending machine in an alley and use the Hat of Illusions to leave a big blue dara guarding it. (In an adorable little hat.) We visit Aunt Ribbeta. She and Toola get kind of flirty for some reason. He winks saucily at her, but he only has one eye, so she doesn’t really notice. We leave the Tuba + Royal Egg with her, and then go hit the town. We visit Bridge Cat, the giant spirit who sleeps under the bridge. We do some shopping. We visit the Courier Brigade Headquarters and send a letter home to Granhilda asking about the history of the nakudama monarchy. (“Is re-establishing the royal line a good idea? yes/no”) Anura gets directions to the dara village in the east of the island from the postal knights, and gets some mail to deliver. Then we hit up a small back alley bar and everybody gets drunk and rowdy. Except for Anura whose training and discipline forbid her from drinking. Tuba and Leon start brawling in the bar and we get kicked out. And we go prowling the streets looking to avenge Mio’s defeat at the hands of the Kara Kara. We find a row of vending machines and go totally Office Space. Leon creates a fog cloud to conceal our crimes. Anura keeps trying to direct her drunk companions' attacks toward actual kara kara machines to keep the collateral damage to a minimum. She also marks the destroyed machines with kara kara and pico pico signs in hopes that the two gangs will blame each other for the destruction. Then they all run away giggling into the night.

Gonna be visiting for the next two months, and was sad to be away from my regularly scheduled games for that long. But! Turns out there is a group that plays at the local rural public library that plays up to twice a week! I crashed, and was welcomed at the table. I rolled up Ross, level 3 human fighter. I have never played a human, nor a fighter, and decided to just embrace the basic. I joined an exotic caster party: a dragonborn sorcerer and a centaur druid. So I added some much needed martial prowess to the game, and felt really successful right away in my role.

    + +

There are apparently several different games going on simultaneously, but this one is a homebrew game where the earth is slowly freezing, and we are trying to bring about the big thaw. This session was a pretty straightforward retrieval mission: go into the frozen woods and retrieve and artifact from the frozen lake. Lots of random encounters and survival checks along the way.

    + +

Looking forward to playing more with this group during my stay. But also I will be starting a new gig on Wednesday, which I anticipate will eat into my free time and hobby time. So we’ll see!

    + + +

Flash forward, and the gang is interviewing applicants to fill Lucia’s role. There is Larry the Magnificent, a narcissist conjurer who seemingly has accomplished nothing; Desmerelda, a literal blood-thirsty vampire; and Darlene Fairweather, a darling cook and novelist who is the obvious pick.

    + +

Flash back to the Battle of Thannalas. Lucia has just been killed, and everybody sharing the spirit link feels it right away. Diablo starts slinging healing spells into the air in a panic. Dakka dimension doors herself, Diablo, and Darragh to the Carl’s side, and they join some Thricken in trying to heal him. Jolly grabs a ship and heads to the wreckage of the ship where Lucia immolated and sifts through the rubble in despair.

    + +

Everybody meets up at the town well, which has collapsed, and helps to clear it. Down in the well, a few casualties from the battle have attracted some large carrion crawlers. One attacks Dakka and almost kills him. Jolly skewers it. Darlene helps Dakka back up, and Dakka shatters it to pieces, and takes out his trauma on it, hacking at it. Jolly eases him off, and everybody crawls out.

Durr has appointed the babywipes his legal champion. They must defend him in a court of law and prove his innocence!

    + +

The gang investigates, finds giant spider venom in the tea (a paralyzing neurotoxin), the murder weapon (a sacrificial dagger bearing the markings of no known god), gets the cause and time of death from the autopsy, uses the corpse-shrooms to watch Loden’s final moments and also discover that Blavin was a witness, and secures an alibi for Durr. All in all, it was obvious after two days of trial that Durr was innocent in the case of Loden Earthstone’s murder.

    + +

    Take that!

    + +

    2025-09-09 D&D 5.5e: Blue Harber Adventurers Guild#

    + + +

The current state of affairs is: Blue Harbor under siege from the Mollusks, a new Breach appeared in the harbor, the unethical wizard ignoring his responsibilities, and the President of the Blue Harbor Adventurers Guild is pressing legal charges against our heroes for sending the snails after him and then skipping town.

    + +

Loden draws weapons after Kore punches him, and a huge scuffle ensues. Morgan drops an orb of darkness on him, Loden smashes the bujeezus out of Plank and then drops fireballs on everybody. He throws a snat at them, and it poisons Kore. Then Loden drops his disguise and is revealed to be Flavia, Vito’s maniacal ex-flame. She flies up out of the darkness and blasts Plank and Kore with eldritch blasts. Around this time, Blavin comes screaming down and around the corner, crying that Loden has been murdered! Flavia flies away. She leaves her cloak, and a pin with the Sign of the Twelve (the Forgotten Gods). The gang goes upstairs and finds Loden dead in his office, an empty glass by hand, in a pool of blood, a stab wound in his chest, and “DUR” written in the drying blood. The constables show up and take Durr and Blavin into custody for protection. Detective Gumption takes statements and evidence. The coroner shows up and takes the body away.

    2025-08-31 D&D: Tales of Athas#

    + + +

Today, the last day of August, Diablo’s birthday, the morning of Brunches & Dragons.

    + +

We accept the burden of piloting Black Mountain, which again is some kind of a giant space ship that crashed to earth millennia ago, and which currently serves as home to the great psionic dragon, who has kind of hermit-crabbed his way inside of it and is wearing it like a shell.

    + +

The pirates have begun their raid on Thanalus in earnest. The town is presenting a meager defense thanks to us getting them word of the attack ahead of time. After a rough couple of starts, the gang supports each other taking turns at the helm and giving commands to the dragon. (Whose name turns out to be Dweezil?) It takes out most of the ships, and also most of the coast line (including the invaders) with a mighty swipe of its tail.

    + +

Lucia leaps out a window, turns into a bird, and flies into the fracas, raining curtains of fire on some of the enemy ships.

    + +

The canoneers on the mountain though are still firing at the town. So Jolly forges an executive order from the now dead Captain Jerrik, and runs down, and commands them to fire on the “deserters, spies, and mutineers” on the ships.

    + +

The ships drift in and out of range as the mountain turns, but they finally fire, absolutely decimating the last two remaining ships, including the one Lucia was on. She tries to cast a spell at the last possible second to save herself, but fumbles the casting, and in death explodes, creating an absolute inferno that for a moment burns brighter than the dying red sun.

The night before: Beartown celebrates the defeat of the Big Bopper and vengeance for their fallen comrades. Vito hangs out with the dwarven breach clean-up crew. Plank hangs with the mysterious green cloaked figure.

    + +

The morning after: Morgan wakes up to a trashed room, and Jellybean is missing. Vito wakes up to a trashed room, and Honestly steals Plank’s preserved fingers and runs off.

    + +

At breakfast, a small menacing snail is crawling furiously toward Kore. Plank picks it up and it starts gumming on her hand. Vito traps it in a circle of salt. Jellybean comes strolling back in.

    + +

Mayor Gri shows the team their wanted poster. So they go get a bunch of supplies and disguises. Vito carves some masks and makes bear foot shoes for Morgan.

    + +

In the forest, they pass the dire beaver lake. At the concrete slab, Plank access the fungal network to discover its history. They group has a big dance party on the platform, as was intended.

    + +

Szuzs has been tracking a dire bear this whole time, not knowing it was really just Morgan wearing bear foot shoes. He is very disappointed.

    + +

Some goblin bounty hunters show up and try to capture the team. They want the reward money to plate their teeth with gold and have “shiny bites.” Vito just gives them some strange gold pieces in exchange for 50 pieces of scrap.

    + +

Some foppish frog dandy bounty hunters show up. They want the reward money to guy new clothes. Vito insults their fashion, and they attack, and are soundly whomped.

    + +

They finally arrive to find Blue Harbor under seige: giant slugs destroying crops, giant clams blocking harbor.

    + +

The cornbeasts stand idly by, doing nothing, because the slugs are not dire crows, which are the only things they have been programmed to deter.

    + +

The gang tracks down Loden Earthstone and negotiations go sour when Kore glaives him.
