## 2025-09-06 ismatu gwendolyn: on money and "reality"
i stumbled upon this youtube video essay yesterday.
i'm having trouble describing it now,
but it's written and presented with incredible lucidity and frankness.
ismatu published both a written *and* video version,
but their delivery in the video is too good to miss.
ismatu says that "reality" is only that which we participate in.
the primary vehicle for this idea is their teaching that
american dollars are purely an imaginary concept,
supposed to be a clean abstraction from the material world to the economic,
but which are only so on the very surface.
the thought that really stuck with me was:
if money is made-up,
and falls from the sky where the money-makers live,
and can be created freely simply by saying so with the right authority...
why should we ever struggle to hoard it?
the "realities" of this world
are nothing more than the thoughts we all agree to share.
wake up; do not live to work,
to fuel the capitalistic death machine
with your stressors repressed in the name of feeling better.
wake up; live now.
